Now for some history

For many centuries the history of the Côte-d'Or was the same as that of Burgundy as a whole. It was only after the French revolution that Burgundy was officially divided into four ''départements'' (on 24th February, 1790).

At this point the history of the Côte-d'Or proper could be said to begin.
It could have been called the "Haute Seine" (Upper Seine) or the ''Seine-et-Saône'', but in this wine growing region, people preferred to think about colours and flavours and so it was given a name that conjures up the golden sun shining on the vine leaves.
