The Côte-d'Or today

The Côte-d'Or today

The Côte-d'Or is like a lot of other French departments.
A few local figures have made their mark on French political life, such as Gaston-Gérard, the mayor of Dijon, who became the first Secretary of State for Public Works and Tourism in 1920.
And then there is Canon Kir, another famous mayor, who created the world-famous aperitif that bears his name and consists of one third blackcurrant liqueur to two thirds Aligoté white wine.

In 1925 Jacques Copeau set up his theatre in the little village of Pernand-Vergelesses and the animal sculptor, François Pompon, created his famous polar bear.

Dijon became the undisputed capital of the region with its position at the centre of the transport and communications networks.

The Côte-d'Or today enjoys a reputation for fine food and wine, for a wonderful historical heritage and for an enviable way of life, which it owes in large measure to its rich history and to the firm attachment of its inhabitants to their many traditions.
